20 of the Most Anticipated New Books to Read this August
Fans of what-if/alternate lives/time travel fiction will be drawn to Adlakha’s debut centered on Maria, 39, a psychiatrist, wife and mother of two with one on the way who wakes one day in her 17-year-old body. When she learns she’s been sent back to prevent a tragedy involving her husband’s family, will it change his — or her — future forever?
Booklist Starred Review
Adlakha’s debut is a truly compelling read, making the reader consider what they would do if offered a second chance, how they might deal with an impossible choice, and what is most important in life. The characters are relatable, the story is gripping, and the blend of domestic fiction with a hint of science fiction is just plain great. Offer it to fans of Kate Atkinson’s Life after Life (2013), Jo Walton’s My Real Children (2014), and book clubs.

Maria wonders if she can change history without risking the future that she wants desperately to return to. “This is a brilliantly written story with phenomenal character development that will leave you asking the question, ‘what would I do?’” says librarian Isabella P. “I’m eager to see what this author writes next.”
